Australia Day is on 26th January and is a Public Holiday in Australia. It is a time for family and friends to get together and fly the Australian Flag. People decorate their homes and businesses with Australian Bunting and Cutouts. Australia Day falls on January 26th and was originally known as Anniversary Day. This is a public day in Australia and celebrates the establisment of the first European settlement of Port Jackson and the first fleet to arrive there. In 1838 Australians enjoyed the first public holiday commemorating the founding of Australia. Now on this day Australians think about the achievements of the Nation while rejoicing in their country and culture. This is now a day off of work for most people and an opportunity to be with family and friends having Picnics and attending sporting events as well as going shopping as shops are often open. Many people also become Australian Citizens on this day. A lot of homes and businesses fly the Australian Flag and put up Bunting and Decorations. All over the world Auatralians celebrate this special day in pubs and restaurants where they dress up in Corkscrew Hats and put up Australian Cutouts .
